I came up with these two-tone health dials for Marvel Champions to imitate an honor dial I had for AEG’s Legend of the Five Rings CCG. As a bonus, I also got to play with a new material for the laser, some really nice two-tone laserable plastic.
Health Dial Design
The top piece is just the same old S.H.I.E.L.D. logo I’ve used on other projects. For functionality, there’s a little notch cut out the top so we can see the number plate through it and a hole in the middle for the Chicago screw. The number plate is a full circle, with numbers 1 to 20 set radially around the perimeter. I went with one of the comic fonts used on the cards. Sure, I could have fit more numbers if I went smaller, or more condensed. But going up to 20 was fine for me. Too bad for poor Hulk.
Material Choice
I’ve covered engraving acrylic in the past. These come out great, but you need to fill in the design to really make them pop. With these two-tone laserable plastics from Trotec, that second step is no more. It took me a while to get the settings dialed in, but with some help from the Glowforge forums, here’s what I came up with.
Two-Tone Health Dials Coming to Life
After lasering away the thin top layer of material, we’re left with a lot of sticky residue. I’m talking about a gray hazy top and sticky sides. That’s where the real hero comes in. Believe me, I was skeptical, but the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser is as magic as the name implies. With a little scrubbing and we’re left with our two-tone marvel champions health dial.
